Connecticut Auto Insurance

"Being insured is the law in Connecticut"

Consumers have questions and so did we...

• What are the types of insurance coverage and what are the amounts required for the province of Connecticut.

• What does the law say pertaining to minimum insurance coverage in Connecticut?

Connecticut has strict mandatory policies about vehicle registration, insurance coverage minimums, and financial responsibilities pertaining to every vehicle owned, operated, or parked on its roadways. In Connecticut, you can obtain your learner’s permit at sixteen and your restricted license at sixteen and four months, with a full license at eighteen.

To adhere to Connecticut's auto insurance rules, you must...

In Connecticut, you must maintain a current insurance policy with a registered insurance company or broker carrying the minimum insurance requirements or greater. There are many different types of insurance, at competitive rates, so shop around for the best price. Be aware that once insured, if you miss a payment on your policy, your insurance could be cancelled, without notice.

1. Connecticut requires each driver to carry third party liability insurance, also called PLPD, accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured and unidentified driver’s coverage, which insures you, in case you injure someone, cause a death, or damage someone’s property in a motor vehicle accident.

In Connecticut, you must have third party liability insurance for bodily injury with each person allowed $20,000.00, up to maximum of $40,000.00, as well as an additional $10,000.00 for property damages. If there are more than two people injured, whoever files first gets the settlement.

2. In Connecticut, you must carry your driver’s license and proof of insurance, which has not expired, in your motor vehicle. If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. You driver’s license can also be suspended if you owe back child support.

Important facts about auto coverage in Connecticut:

• Your driver’s license can be suspended, if you are caught driving without adequate insurance, with too many fines, or driving while under the influence of alcohol or refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, and leaving the scene of an accident or failing to file an accident report. Seat belts are mandatory in Connecticut.
• You are required to change your driver’s license, if you move, within seven days.
• Your insurance agent has access to your driving record to check for fines, suspensions, and accidents that can cause your policy to increase or be cancelled.
• If you are in an accident, and do not have the minimum insurance, you are financially responsible for all injury and damage settlements awarded by the courts.

Comprehensive or collision insurance does NOT meet minimum requirements.

Auto Insurance FAQ

Question: Can an Auto Insurance company force you to use aftermarket parts for repair in Connecticut?
I had tire tread fly into my car on the highway. Tore the bumper and smashed the condenser. The insurance company has after market parts on the estimate, but I want to sell this car someday and want OEM. I'm pretty sure I am out of luck, but just wanted to make sure as this is my first time dealing with an incident. Thanks. Haha, yes, I know what after market is. What I didn't know was insurance policy and effect to the value of the vehicle. Great answers so far. Thanks for all your help.

Answer: When you go to sell the car they wont' care about the OEM parts. If you go to a dealer to trade the car in, they will see work is done. Right there they will assume the worst. You can fight yoru insurance company. Get an estimate on your own and see if they will pay for it or meet you half way.

Question: im looking for a program in connecticut on how and where to take a prep class to sell auto insurance?

Answer: The insurance companies have their own program, good once will pay you during the training. Ask your insurance agents. If you put you resume on any net work say monster.com or carrier builder.com the insurance companies will contact you. Be careful some are very good some are not good can cost you money and time. Stay away from initial investment type, or promise to return the money.

Question: auto insurance with international driving licence in CT?
I'm a graduate student, I want to buy a car but I don't have a U.S. license yet. Does any one know how much auto insurance would cost in Connecticut with an international licence? I have only heard from people that its more expensive.

Answer: The insurance cost will depend on your age and the make, model and year of the vehicle you buy. It may be more expensive simply because you have no US driving record, so any insurer who sells you coverage is taking a risk that you may or may not be a good driver with no prior knowledge. I don't know how much data they can gather about your international license (i.e. any moving violations, accident history), so the extra expense they charge you is, in effect, their risk premium for taking on a driver with no recorded history.

Question: What comp has cheapest liability insurance in Connecticut with excellent driver history on paid of older cars?
Safe Auto Insurance Company in Midwest and Pa offers in other states and can be as low as $350 or so for 6 months with minimum state coverage such as in the Midwest. I know Connecticut requires non insured motorists insurance as part of the plan. Currently 39 year old female with early 1990's paid off car and no accidents or tickets for many years and no gap in coverage and Progressive was the best I could find at $106 and change a month with direct withdrawal...any suggestions for cheaper?

Answer: I suggest you visit a local auto insurance agent to help. Since I live in Missouri I can't recommend anyone in Connecticut, but here is an online resource that can help you. http://www.usinsuranceadvisor.com/Auto-Insurance.html Hope it works out
