Georgia Auto Insurance

"Being insured is the law in Georgia"

Consumers have questions and so did we...

• What are the types of insurance coverage and what are the amounts required for the province of Georgia.

• What does the law say pertaining to minimum insurance coverage in Georgia?

Georgia has strict mandatory policies about vehicle registration, insurance coverage minimums, and financial responsibilities pertaining to every vehicle owned, operated, or parked on its roadways. In Georgia, you can obtain your learner’s permit at fifteen and your restricted license at sixteen, with a full license at eighteen.

To adhere to Georgia's auto insurance rules, you must...

In Georgia, you must maintain a current insurance policy with a registered insurance company or broker carrying the minimum insurance requirements or greater. There are many different types of insurance, at competitive rates, so shop around for the best price. Be aware that once insured, if you miss a payment on your policy, your insurance could be cancelled, without notice.

1. Georgia requires each driver to carry third party liability insurance, also called PLPD, accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured and unidentified driver’s coverage, which insures you, in case you injure someone, cause a death, or damage someone’s property in a motor vehicle accident.

In Georgia, you must have third party liability insurance for bodily injury with each person allowed $15,000.00, up to maximum of $30,000.00, as well as an additional $10,000.00 for property damages. If there are more than two people injured, whoever files first gets the settlement.

2. In Georgia, you must carry your driver’s license and proof of insurance, which has not expired, in your motor vehicle. If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. You driver’s license can also be suspended if you owe back child support.

Important facts about auto coverage in Georgia:

• Your driver’s license can be suspended, if you are caught driving without adequate insurance, with too many fines, or driving while under the influence of alcohol or refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, and leaving the scene of an accident or failing to file an accident report. Seat belts are mandatory in Georgia.
• You are required to change your driver’s license, if you move, within seven days.
• Your insurance agent has access to your driving record to check for fines, suspensions, and accidents that can cause your policy to increase or be cancelled.
• If you are in an accident, and do not have the minimum insurance, you are financially responsible for all injury and damage settlements awarded by the courts.

Comprehensive or collision insurance does NOT meet minimum requirements.

Question: Will your auto insurance go up if you get a 2 point ticket in Georgia?
I haven't had a ticket in over 5 years and I'm over 30yrs old. I was going 40mph in a 25mph zone. I've Heard that Insurance companys will not even look at your driving history unless you change your policy or if you're already labeled a high risk driver. Also since it was only a 2 point ticket I've heard that it will not raise your rate unless you get another 2 point ticket within a short period of time. Can anyone verify this info?

Answer: It depends on if the insurance company runs your MVR or not. Some will run it at renewal time and others don't. Your best bet is to wait and see. If your rates go up then it might be a good time to shop around. Here is a directory of local agents: http://www.findlocalinsurance.com

Where do I find laws on insurance companies and georgia statues on what they have to do? anywebsites or resources would help

Answer: If I were you I would contact the Insurance Commissioner's office or the Department of Insurance (not sure which it would be called in GA) about that. You'll probably have to file a written complaint. You didn't tell us enough for us to comment as to whether the insurance company is doing you right or wrong.

Question: How to become an auto insurance adjuster?
I live in Georgia, and wanting some details on becoming an auto insurance claims adjuster, I currently work for an towing company have some experience in vehicles. also, how much money do they make?

Answer: The answer will vary depending on if you want to become an Adjuster (one who investigates liability) or an appraiser (one who only estimates vehicle damages. First off, either one can be a very stressful, thankless job. Depending on what company and location you could start as a trainee in the high 20's or low 30's. A good way to get into either position is to get a job as a trainee at a large insurance company. That is where you will get your best training and more importantly experience. Check with jobsites such as www.greatinsurancejobs.com or www.careerbuilder.com You might also check with any local vocational schools in your area as many of them are beginning to offer classes in becoming an adjuster. Good Luck

Question: Can the auto insurance company pay me directly for my medical expenses or do they have to pay the doctor?
I was in an auto accident and I have medical insurance. My medical insurance covered my medical expenses; however, I wanted to know if the auto insurance is still liable for those expenses? It seems as if my having medical insurance should benefit me and not the liable party's auto insurance company. If I did not have medical insurance the auto insurance company would still have to pay for those expenses. So shouldn't they still have to pay for those expenses and I get what ever is left that my medical insurance company did not pay? Are there any laws statures that back this up in Georgia? I am trying to settle this claim without getting an attorney and I need all the help I can get. Any advice would be helpful. I am in the process of writing a demand letter. Thanks for all the help.

Answer: Your medical insurance provider will collect from the insurance company of the driver who caused your injuries. This process is called subrogation. It is standard practice throughout the US. You are not entitled to dual benefit from your injuries. Go ahead and consult an attorney -- he or she will almost certainly tell you the same thing. If you have a pain and suffering claim, that would be paid by the insurance company of the at-fault driver, assuming that there is any room left on his liability coverage. If he had minimum liability that's probably been exhausted already. An attorney can help with that part of your claim if need be.

Question: Car Insurance in Georgia?
I just bought a new car, and I was wondering what does the state of Georgia consider to be "full coverage" auto insurance?

Answer: The state of Georgia doesn't care what "full coverage" is. The state only cares that you carry liability on your car. This is shown as a number on your insurance policy such as 100/300/100. This means that the insurance company will pay out $100,000 for injuries to one person in another vehicle if you cause an accident and up to $300,000 for all people in the other vehicles. The second 100 means they will pay $100,000 for property damage for things that you may hit, such as another car or a building. "Full coverage" is not really an insurance term and different people may have different definitions. The bank requires "full coverage" to pay them off if the car is totaled or stolen. The basic "full coverage" that the bank requires consists of Comprehensive and Collision coverage and comes with a deductible. Some people would classify Uninsured and Underinsured coverage under the term "full coverage" as well as Medical or PIP coverage.
