Hawaii Auto Insurance

"Being insured is the law in Hawaii"

Consumers have questions and so did we...

• What are the types of insurance coverage and what are the amounts required for the state of Hawaii.

• What does the law say pertaining to minimum insurance coverage in Hawaii?

Hawaii has strict mandatory policies about vehicle registration, insurance coverage minimums, and financial responsibilities pertaining to every vehicle owned, operated, or parked on its roadways. In Hawaii, you can obtain your learner’s permit at fifteen and a half, and your restricted license at sixteen, with a full license at seventeen.

To adhere to Hawaii's auto insurance rules, you must...

In Hawaii, you must maintain a current insurance policy with a registered insurance company or broker carrying the minimum insurance requirements or greater. There are many different types of insurance, at competitive rates, so shop around for the best price. Be aware that once insured, if you miss a payment on your policy, your insurance could be cancelled, without notice.

1. Hawaii requires each driver to carry third party liability insurance, also called PLPD, accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured and unidentified driver’s coverage, which insures you, in case you injure someone, cause a death, or damage someone’s property in a motor vehicle accident.

In Hawaii, you must have third party liability insurance for bodily injury with each person allowed $20,000.00, up to maximum of $40,000.00, as well as an additional $10,000.00 for property damages. If there are more than two people injured, whoever files first gets the settlement.

2. In Hawaii, you must carry your driver’s license and proof of insurance, which has not expired, in your motor vehicle. If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. You driver’s license can also be suspended if you owe back child support.

Important facts about auto coverage in Hawaii:

• Your driver’s license can be suspended, if you are caught driving without adequate insurance, with too many fines, or driving while under the influence of alcohol or refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, and leaving the scene of an accident or failing to file an accident report. Seat belts are mandatory in Hawaii.
• You are required to change your driver’s license, if you move, within seven days.
• Your insurance agent has access to your driving record to check for fines, suspensions, and accidents that can cause your policy to increase or be cancelled.
• If you are in an accident, and do not have the minimum insurance, you are financially responsible for all injury and damage settlements awarded by the courts.

Comprehensive or collision insurance does NOT meet minimum requirements.

Question: north carolina and auto insurance and tickets?
ok me and my husband live in nc and will move to hawaii in a few weeks. he has gotten 3 tickets within the past yr and a half. 1 speeding on post- paid, running red light on post-paid, and today he made what an mp called an illegal pass after his buddy told him to since he had a navigation. it was in a neighborhood off post but owned by the post and the mps here are extreme jerks made him do a breath test even though noone had any alcohol and he yelled at him for not breathing right and then for breathing too hard?! i have no tickets but now he has 3 he wants to fight this one he got today but in nc how many before auto insurance is affected? we have state farm and luckily nothing yet but will this put us over the limit? and when we go to hawaii and switch to hawaii insurance will it carry over?

Answer: The tickets will follow you to HI. Now, for the other part of your question, it all depends on how long you have been with the company, which company (level) of SF you are in, how far apart the tickets are spaced, are there any other accidents or losses on your (and his) record, among a few other things. Chances are if you are the Mutual level and there is nothing else in the household (accidents or losses), you'll be fine. It may disqualify some discounts though. Call and talk to your agent - they will better be able to inform you with rules specific to your situation and state. Good Luck - and enjoy Hawaii!!

Question: how much rental car insurance do I actually need?
I don't have stateside auto insurance. We are military living overseas. Renting a car in Hawaii and don't want to spend a fortune in rental car insurance but want to be covered.

Answer: If you have a Gold or Platinum credit card you're probably covered, read your credit card agreement. If you don't have a credit card that covers rental cars, you will need to get the collision damage waiver insurance from the rental company. Most now do not limit your liability if you don't take the coverage or have a credit card that covers you.
