Consumers have questions and so did we...

If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. You driver’s license can also be suspended if you owe back child support.

Question: How much are people in Illinois paying for auto insurance for an 18 year old boy?
He doesn't have a car yet, I just want to know how much other parents are paying for their son's insurance, before I decide when he gets one.
Answer: Insurance is very individual because it's based on personal record, sex, age, and a number of other variables such as location, credit rating etc
I was able to save money through a free on-line quoting service at http://gsx1.com/InsuranceComparison.html
They had several links. All I did was fill out their quote request and received back a lot better rates then what I was paying.
I would suggest you get your son to try more than one quote before you settle with anyone, the service is free and there's no obligation so you might as well try it.

As the student drivers parent, is my current auto insurance coverage in effect and still valid (for me and my 16 yr old) when my 16 year old student driver is driving my vehicle (supervised driving\practice), even though I have not added them as a driver on my auto insurance policy. We live in Illinois. After the student driver receives their official drivers license am I required to add them as a driver to my auto ins policy, or am I and this new driver still covered by my policy because I have given them permission to operate my vehicle?
Answer: It depends on the company, but in most situations, yes...you must add them...otherwise risk an unpaid claim if an accident arises.
If you have been with your insurance company for an extended period of time it is possible they may not charge you if it is just a permit or learners lic ....some companies do this for preferred policyholders but you need to report it either way...not worth an upaid claim.

Answer: Insurance companies are required to send a list of everyone who has filed for insurance with them to the state. If you apply for a driver's license and you're not on their list, they know you don't have auto insurance. Likewise, if you are dropped by your auto insurance company, they are required to send the state notification of that as well, so the state also knows when you've been dropped and will send you a note telling you that you need to get auto insurance. In addition, you need to carry proof of insurance with you in the car at all times in case of a traffic stop.
Question: when did the mandatory auto insurance go into effect in Illinois?
Answer: Illinois has always required you to have insurance, however it was made manditory on the 1st of January of 2005.
