"Being insured is the law in Indiana"
Consumers have questions and so did we...
• What are the types of insurance coverage and what are the amounts required for the state of Indiana.
• What does the law say pertaining to minimum insurance coverage in Indiana?
Indiana has strict mandatory policies about vehicle registration, insurance coverage minimums, and financial responsibilities pertaining to every vehicle owned, operated, or parked on its roadways. In Indiana, you can obtain your learner’s permit at fifteen and your restricted license at sixteen and one month, with a full license at eighteen.
To adhere to Indiana's auto insurance rules, you must...
In Indiana, you must maintain a current insurance policy with a registered insurance company or broker carrying the minimum insurance requirements or greater. There are many different types of insurance, at competitive rates, so shop around for the best price. Be aware that once insured, if you miss a payment on your policy, your insurance could be cancelled, without notice.
1. Indiana requires each driver to carry third party liability insurance, also called PLPD, accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured and unidentified driver’s coverage, which insures you, in case you injure someone, cause a death, or damage someone’s property in a motor vehicle accident.
In Indiana, you must have third party liability insurance for bodily injury with each person allowed $25,000.00, up to maximum of $50,000.00, as well as an additional $10,000.00 for property damages. If there are more than two people injured, whoever files first gets the settlement.
2. In Indiana, you must carry your driver’s license and proof of insurance, which has not expired, in your motor vehicle. If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. You driver’s license can also be suspended if you owe back child support.
Important facts about auto coverage in Indiana:
• Your driver’s license can be suspended, if you are caught driving without adequate insurance, with too many fines, or driving while under the influence of alcohol or refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, and leaving the scene of an accident or failing to file an accident report. Seat belts are mandatory in Indiana.
• You are required to change your driver’s license, if you move, within seven days.
• Your insurance agent has access to your driving record to check for fines, suspensions, and accidents that can cause your policy to increase or be cancelled.
• If you are in an accident, and do not have the minimum insurance, you are financially responsible for all injury and damage settlements awarded by the courts.

Question: can you get auto insurance in indiana with a suspended drivers license? i have a suspended drivers license and cannot reinstate with out proff of insurance.
Answer: You'll need to get an SR-22 from the insurance company (they'll know what it is)... Here's what the Indiana BMV has to say on the topic:
"When a motorist’s operator license is suspended upon conviction of a major offense, that driver must submit proof of insurance to the BMV before being reinstated. This filing provides that the driver has an auto liability policy in effect that cannot be cancelled without prior notice. A valid SR-22 Proof of Insurance form must be filed with the BMV for three years after the end of the suspension. If the BMV receives a cancellation notice or does not have a current SR-22 form on file at any time during the three-year period after reinstatement, the motorist’s driving privileges will become suspended again.
"If a motorist is convicted of driving while suspended, the violation carries a mandatory minimum suspension of 90 days served concurrently with any other suspensions."

Question: What effect will a speeding ticket have on my State Farm auto insurance premium in Indiana? Would it be better to take the ticket deferral or just pay the fine? It was a minor 2 point violation for speeding 54 in a 40. The state trooper also issued a written warning for disregarding a traffic signal. This is my first ticket in over seven years and State Farm states this shouldn't raise my premium. Is this true or are they just saying this so I will pump more money into their company. Anyone familiar with this process.......Please Help?!?!
Answer: First of all, in Indiana they can't change your premium until your next renewal. So find out when that is and that will tell you when you might expect your first change. The only thing you can do is to pay the ticket and wait to see what actually happens.
Like I say, your premium won't change until your renewal and you will get 30 days notice before your renewal. So if it does go up you will have plenty of time to get other quotes and make a change.
If you haven't had any tix or accidents in a while then it may not increase your premium, but you just have to wait for your renewal to know for sure.
Question: Auto Insurance in Indiana? I have had Progressive for many years and no claims. We do deserve cheaper rates because of our age and driving record and low mileage. I recieved a much lower quote from Indiana Farmers Mutal Insurance. I have a 2000 Tahoe that is like right off the show room floor and I understand most companies are allowed to relace parts from a junk yard or for much lower than would it would cost unless it is under 2 years old. Has anyone placed a claim with either of these companies and what was your satisfaction? Because of the condition of our Tahoe, which is perfect and just over 30 thousand miles and a limited edition, who has ideas on the best auto insurance out here in Indiana?
Answer: good and cheap insurance companies around Indiana. I found here. http://all-car-insurance.blogspot.com/Good luck!
Question: In the state of Indiana, If I get a speeding ticket will it raise my auto insurance rates?
Answer: Maybe. Most companies will "forgive" the first speeding ticket you get, which means, your FIRST ticket won't raise your rates. Your second one will, though.
Question: How much generally does an insurance agent make in Indiana? How much in general does an insurance agent make in Indiana?
What type makes the most income, Auto or personal type insurance?
Answer: I agree with both answers you have already been given. Do you already have your license? I know of a company in Indiana that trains and pays you to learn all the insurance fields.
Question: In Indiana, how much money should I ask for from an auto accident insurance claim? Someone ran a stop sign in the country (not in town) and t-boned my mini-van. He was an employee of a tree company driving the company vehicle and admitted looking at the trees/power lines instead of paying attention to the road. There were witnesses that saw him hit my van with me and my 2 daughters (1 & 6 yrs.) inside. 1 of my daughters was transported by ambulance along with me. She's done with treatment but I'm still seeking chiropractic care (done with physical therapy though) about once a week. The insurance co. wants to settle but offered me $15,000 but the bills themselves are up to over $18,000. I told the adjuster, there is no way that will work and that I'd get back to her on an amount. WHAT SHOULD I SAY AND ASK FOR? I definately want my bills paid but also would like to take into consideration the amount of money it will cost me in the next however many years for maintenance care for my neck and back pain. PLEASE HELP ME..I WANT TO SOLVE THIS W/OUT HIRING A LAWYER!
Answer: Have you contacted your own insurance company? Typically when there's large amounts of medical bills involved, your insurance company will use your policy limits to pay. Here in Ohio, we'd keep the claim open for up to 3 years. Once that time limit has passed, we subrogate against the other company and get our money back.
If you don't have any medical payments coverage on your own policy, then that's not an option. The other insurance company isn't going to be happy keeping your claim open for years. Your best bet is to hire a lawyer.
Question: Auto Insurance and Car Alarm Discount? I reside in Indiana. I recently had a car alarm installed on my car and my insurance company (IDS Property and Casualty) informed me that since I resided in Indiana, I could not get a discount on mauto insurance.
I knew that you could not get a discount for having a Lojack installed in Indiana.
Answer: Most companies do not have a discount for standard alarms, but do offer discounts for Lojack/Onstar type systems. This is because a standard alarm really is ignored in this day and age, and it doesn't change the risk in any way. However, a Lojack system can be used to help find the vehicle if stolen. Even then, the discount is usually pretty small (though it varies by company) since it doesn't help the two largest risks in insurance, liability and collision.
Question: How do I handle insurance etc. when selling a vehicle by owner? I live in Michigan and the buyer is coming from Indiana. Should I cancel my auto insurance before the buyer leaves with the vehicle? What if the buyer dosn't have insurance for it yet (and can't get it today, because it is Saturday) and asks me to wait till Monday to cancel my policy on the vehicle? What about registration and sales tax?
Answer: NEVER EVER cover strangers on your insurance (even close relatives and friends are very risky)!!! Your tag should come off and your insurance be cancelled before the car goes anywhere. He needs to provide current proof of insurance (most policies provide for temporary coverage of new vehicles) or NO SALE.
Any other way and you're likely to take it in the shorts.
Question: Do I need to change my Car Insurance? What do i need to do? I am a foreign student in United States. I stayed at California for 2 years. Now, I moved to Indiana State.
I have a car Insurance with California address. My License plate is still California's.
Do I need to do anything with my insurance?
When I tried to do a trial quote for changing address at Geico, the quote for new address is almost 2 times more expensive than the old one. I don't know what to do. I believe Indiana Auto insurance must be cheaper than that of California.
Should I just cancel it and start a new one? Do I still need to do anything with DMV?
Answer: Find an independent agent, and tell him you have moved from CA to IN and you need insurance. That's assuming your current insurance doesn't cover you in IN, call them and ask about transferring it they do. Do not cancel your current insurance until your new policy is in effect.
Once you are insured and have your card covering you in IN, go to the DMV.
For registration: Register Vehicle as New Indiana Resident To register your vehicle as a new Indiana resident, you will need to visit a license branch and provide your vehicle's Certificate of Origin and Odometer Statement. You will also need to show proof of insurance.
New residents must also apply for a title before receiving a license plate at a branch.
You will also turn in your old drivers license for a new one.
An applicant for a new Indiana operator license who holds a valid photo license issued by another state, the District of Columbia or U.S. Territory must successfully pass a written and vision test.
Question: Will auto insurance companies know my driving record in other state? will they check the other state's record? I used to stay in CA and I have zero violations, basically my record in CA is 100% clean. Then I moved to Indiana for college for a few years. There I got a moving violation ticket and I also made a claim with my insurance company (progressive) for a minor property damage; I crashed into my apartment's carport (this wasn't major accident and only my insurance and apartment know)
So, I have moved back to CA now, and Im considering getting insurance from other companies. Will they know my driving record in Indiana (1 moving violations ticket and the 1 claim i made to progressive)? What are the consequences of witholding this info? My driving record in CA is very clean and Im concerned about disclosing info that I should't have to. I will probably tell them about the claim i made to progressive. but is it ok not to tell them of my moving vioaltions ticket? know they can check from MVR for driving record and from CLUE for claims. But will they check my IN record or CA only?I have CA licens
Answer: You remind me of a client I had that moved here from another province. When we received his driving record, he was mad. He said his accident shouldn't count because he didn't have that car anymore, he sold it before he moved, and besides, the woman he hit was a "witch" with a b. You don't hide claims or violations, because they find out anyway.
