Ontario Auto Insurance
"Being insured is the law in Ontario"
Consumers have questions and so did we
• What are the types of insurance coverage and what are the amounts required for the province of Ontario?
• What does the law say pertaining to minimum insurance coverage in Ontario?
Ontario has strict mandatory policies about vehicle registration, insurance coverage minimums, and financial responsibilities pertaining to every vehicle owned, operated, or parked on its roadways. If you are convicted or driving without insurance, the insurance companies will consider you a “high risk” driver, and charge you a higher premium, or refuse to insure you at all.
To adhere to Ontario's auto insurance rules, you must...
In Ontario, you must maintain a current insurance policy with a registered insurance company or broker meeting the minimum insurance requirements or greater. There are many different types of insurance, at competitive rates, so shop around for the best price. Be aware that once insured, if you miss a payment on your policy, your insurance could be cancelled, without notice.
1. Ontario requires each driver to carry third party liability insurance, also called PLPD, accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured and unidentified driver’s coverage, which insures you, in case you injure someone, cause a death, or damage someone’s property in a motor vehicle accident.
In Ontario, you must have at least $200,000.00 of third party liability insurance to meet the minimum requirements, but if you are, sue for both injury and damages, and found responsible for more than $200,000.00 by the courts, your insurance company will pay no more than $10,000.00 towards the property damage portion.
2. In Ontario, you must carry your driver’s license and proof of insurance, which has not expired, in your motor vehicle. Fines for driver’s not carrying valid auto insurance range from $5,000.00 to $50,000.00. If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. If you are in an accident and you are not wearing your seat belt, which is mandatory in Ontario, your insurance could be void and you would be responsible for all damages that occur.
Important facts about auto coverage in Ontario:
• Your driver’s license can be suspended, if you are caught driving without adequate insurance, with too many fines, or driving while under the influence of alcohol.
• You are required to change your driver’s license, if you move, within seven days.
• Your insurance agent has access to your driving record to check for fines, suspensions, and accidents that can cause your policy to increase or be cancelled.
• If you are in an accident, and do not have the minimum insurance, you are financially responsible for all injury and damage settlements awarded by the courts.

Question: Do I have to list all additional drivers for auto insurance in Ontario? I am shopping for auto insurance and noticed that if I include my wife and son in the quote, the insurance jumps from $1600 a year to $3100. That's almost double and none of them have any accidents or anything. If I don't include them as secondary drivers, can they still drive the vehicle and be insured? And if not, does that mean that every family in Ontario must list all family members that MIGHT drive the vehicle? Answers are MUCH appreciated.
Answer: yes you have to list them, because if you don't list all licensed drivers living in the household, and you have an accident, the insurer can deny the claim based on non-disclosure of information. If you don't wish your rates to go up, you could always have an excluded driver endorsement, but this is not really recommended because what if they absolutely need to drive the vehicle in an emergency...there would be no coverage.
If your wife and son have their own automobiles insured elsewhere, or say your son is listed on your wife's policy, your company would likely not charge for him on your policy. They will just require proof that they are insured elsewhere.
Or, if that's not the case, how about listing both, but having your son pay for his share of the premium? If he's listed on your policy, it will be to his benefit in the future, because he'll maintain a continuous insurance record, which will save him tons when he decides to buy his own Mustang.
Question: Which auto brand is the cheapest for insurance in Ontario? I heard that, for auto insurance, Van is cheaper than sedan, Is it true? Could you please tell me which auto brand is the cheapest for auto insurance (e.g. Ford, Nissan, Hyundai)? Thank you in advanced.
