Virginia Auto Insurance
"Being insured is the law in Virginia"
Consumers have questions and so did we...
• What are the types of insurance coverage and what are the amounts required for the state of Virginia.
• What does the law say pertaining to minimum insurance coverage in Virginia?
Virginia has strict mandatory policies about vehicle registration, insurance coverage minimums, and financial responsibilities pertaining to every vehicle owned, operated, or parked on its roadways. In Virginia, you can obtain your learner’s permit at fifteen and a half, and your restricted license at sixteen and three months, with a full license at eighteen.
To adhere to Virginia's auto insurance rules, you must...
In Virginia, you must maintain a current insurance policy with a registered insurance company or broker carrying the minimum insurance requirements or greater. There are many different types of insurance, at competitive rates, so shop around for the best price. Be aware that once insured, if you miss a payment on your policy, your insurance could be cancelled, without notice.
1. Virginia requires each driver to carry third party liability insurance, also called PLPD, accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured and unidentified driver’s coverage, which insures you, in case you injure someone, cause a death, or damage someone’s property in a motor vehicle accident.
In Virginia, you must have third party liability insurance for bodily injury with each person allowed $25,000.00, up to maximum of $50,000.00, as well as an additional $20,000.00 for property damages. If there are more than two people injured, whoever files first gets the settlement.
2. In Virginia, you must carry your driver’s license and proof of insurance, which has not expired, in your motor vehicle. If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. You driver’s license can also be suspended if you owe back child support.
Important facts about auto coverage in Virginia:
• Your driver’s license can be suspended, if you are caught driving without adequate insurance, with too many fines, or driving while under the influence of alcohol or refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, and leaving the scene of an accident or failing to file an accident report. Seat belts are mandatory in Virginia.
• You are required to change your driver’s license, if you move, within seven days.
• Your insurance agent has access to your driving record to check for fines, suspensions, and accidents that can cause your policy to increase or be cancelled.
• If you are in an accident, and do not have the minimum insurance, you are financially responsible for all injury and damage settlements awarded by the courts.

Question: Are there any auto insurance companies in the state of Virginia that offer glass coverage?
Answer: I thought all insurance companies covered glass. In fact, I think the windshield doesn't even have a deductible (but side and rear windows do).
Check it out by calling a random insurance company like http://www.statefarm.com or http://www.geico.com etc...
Question: auto insurance increase in Virginia? Do you have Esurance and live in Virginia? Last year my rate went up 10 bucks and then this year is goes up to $9.89 addition increase. Each of the times I have called about the increase, their reason was that it is statewide due to the increase in repair cost for the state of Virginia. I asked if it was just Esurance or every company. The guy yesterday told me it was just Esurance. Has everyone had this happen to them?
Answer: car-insurance.66ghz.com - I switched to this car insurance from them, cause it gives much cheaper rates in my area.
Question: Are you allowed to drive your parents' car with their permission without auto insurance? I just wanted to know if I can drive my parents' car legally without auto insurance. I live in Virginia, if that is helpful.
I have a license. Just no auto insurance... yet.
Answer: Depending on how old you are, if you have a drivers license and your parents' permission, in some states you can legally drive their vehicle and be covered by their insurance, because the insurance covers the vehicle.
I know it is true in my state up to age 25 but I don't know for sure about Virginia.
If you have a valid drivers license and you are ticketed, you will receive the ticket, not your parents. But your parents' insurance will cover damages to the vehicle and to other property not belonging to you.
Don't bother asking your agent because it is in their best interest if you are insured individually from your parents.
Question: I need help with auto insurance claims in virginia. Am I being taken advantage of? I was rear-ended at midnight June 26th. I was going 25mph in an acura integra and was rear ended by a Dodge 1500 pick up going 50mph. The driver hit and run (leaving the plates from his sisters car). The officer charged the driver. His insurance company (progressive) looked at my car , totaled it, and took a recorded statement. The driver had a revoked license. The insurance rep. said for a week they were waiting to speak with the driver to see who was at fault, but no one can find him. I then got a lawyer, which nothing has happened since then for the same reason, no one can find the driver. The driver has a lawyer so he wont talk to the cops. The cop says he'll be let off because they cant prove he was driving. So will I get any insurance money? It is now July 30th. I heard there was a 6 week limit that the insurance has to do something legally. Thanks so much. PLEASE HELP!!!
I have UM, my insurance says they cant act because progressive is currently "investigating". They wotn act until they know progressive isn't going to act.
Answer: This happens all the time. The fact is the only person that can file a claim is the owner of the insurance policy. If he/she does not then you will be forced to go through your own insurer, which you should have done three weeks ago. They will pay you for your car (providing, of course, you have UM and collision coverage), then they will pursue the other party for recovery.
Question: Will auto insurance companies know about my out-of-state speeding tickets that I paid off 3 years ago? I am applying for auto insurance in California. Over 3 years ago I got speeding tickets in Texas and Virginia(all paid). If I don't tell the insurance companies about them, will they find out anyways?
Answer: For car insurance the easiest method to get a low quote is do a policy comparison. Be sure to choose the same coverage amounts, you can get an fast quote to compare against others. Use the same zip code, car make/model, mileage and driving history to make sure you get accurate comparison. To get mulitple auto quotes, go to http://www.simpleautoquotes.com/Auto-Insurance.html and you can compare all the major auto insurance companies.
Question: Auto insurance question - this is crazy!!!!? My husband and I have insurance through a nationally known firm. When my son got his drivers license (he is 17) our insurance doubled (I knew that would happen). He has since then had his license taken away for 6 months. When I called the insurance company to have him dropped from the policy they said there would be no reduction in our premium. I asked why and they said as long as he lives in our home it will stay that way. I said that is crazy, he HAS NO LICENSE!. They said as long as anyone lives in our home and has no auto insurance, they are an automatic risk for us, they may take one of our cars in an emergency situation. I have never heard of this. They said "Oh yes - if I came to live in your house and had no auto insurance, I would be a risk on your policy. I was like - well how would you know if someone lived in our house. Any advice? This is a Virginia policy. Sounds like we are being ripped off. $600 a month is too much for anyone!!
Answer: I think you are being ripped off. I would change insurance companies asap. That's the best way to send a message "I'm mad as h and I'm not gonna take it any more!" That said, I can only suggest a great company you can only use if you are military, ex-military or related to someone in the military. This company was founded by military people and really goes the extra mile to help members. That's right I said members. When you get the insurance you become a member and actually get a share of the money the company makes. It's called USAA. Find it at https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_logon/Logon
Check it out and see what they offer.
