1958 AC Ace Roadster w- Bristol engine Chassis # AEX 478 Bristol Engine # 100D 589 Best known as the progenitor of the famous Shelby Cobra, the AC Ace with the Bristol engine was a fierce competitor in its own right, winning races ranging from SCCA production to the Le Mans 2-liter class. This example's story can be traced back to the mid-70's when it was discovered under a tarp in Bob Grossman's dealership just north of New York City. Not the most glamorous place for an AC Ace, and it was not officially for sale, but Roger Neuman knew what he was looking at and he wanted it. Unfortunately Grossman knew exactly what he had under that tarp. As a former president of Road Racing Drivers Club, two-time SCCA champion, and a four-time top 10 finisher at the 24-hours of Le Mans, Grossman knew the winning background of the AC Ace. After some spirited negotiations Neuman convinced him to sell the car and, with title in hand, he took the little car home to Pennsylvania. He found the sports car to be in very good condition, with a solid body and floor pans. Neuman would seldom drive the car over the next decade, and in the mid-80's he decided to sell. Bruce Robertson would step up and purchase AEX 478, and bring the car back to his home in Illinois. Over the term of his ownership he would fit the car with its Bristol engine that was once raced by a gentleman out of the Chicago, IL region by the name of F. W. Campbell. After two decades of ownership Robertson decided it was time for a restoration of his faithful sports car. In 2008 he entrusted ZZAAPP Vintage Auto of Maple Park, IL to complete the work. The car was partially disassembled and every major system was rebuilt or replaced. The Bristol engine was removed and rebuilt, along with its heads and ancillary systems. The transmission was found to be in excellent condition and left alone, but before it was reinstalled a new clutch and slave cylinder were installed. Most of suspension was removed and rebuilt along with new shock absorbers. The fuel tank was removed and refurbished. A new radiator was installed, along with a refurbishment of the entire cooling system. An all-new brake system from the master cylinder back was installed, and upgraded with stainless steel sleeving. The charging system was rebuilt and a new exhaust fitted. The carbs were rebuilt. Since its arrival at our dealership, AEX 478 has received a top-to-bottom concours detail to match its ZZAAPP mechanical restoration. From the grill to the chassis, the seats to the trunk, every aspect of the car was inspected, cleaned and detailed as necessary. In addition to all of this work, all five wire wheels were refurbished, painted silver, and shod with new Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The result is a real drivers car. With every system operating as it did in 1958, the driver can experience, first hand, one of best handling cars of its era.Time to put on the driving gloves, fire up the powerful 100D Bristol engine, and find out for yourself.
