We think the 47 Ford presented here would certainly qualify! The car was built by Customizer Dave Crook and designed by legendary GM Stylist Harry Bradley. One of the reasons the project took so long was the fact that Dave is not a professional builder. We use the term professional to describe someone who creates hot rods for a living. Dave did not. But, that doesnt take anything away from his immense talent! The only difference is that Dave built this masterpiece, as well as his other projects in a garage in back of his house . . . in his spare time, rather than a professional shop. And that just makes the end result all the more special! Dave, who worked in the GM Design Center in the 60s after being hired by the larger than life Bill Mitchell found this car in Fresno, CA. in need of a complete restoration. But, the good news was is started out as a rust free example in cherry condition! He had owned a number of 47 coupes way back when, but he always wanted to build a convertible. When he made his mind up to start the project, Harry Bradley was promptly contacted to start the design process. Dave and Harry had known each other since 70 when Harry designed a Firebird concept Dave was building. As with most pieces of art, it often takes a second or third look to really appreciate all of the fine details, and this Ford has details to spare! Starting with the bodywork, a one-piece, Studebaker windshield was laid back an appropriate 47 degrees and extensive mods were done to the header and frame to get 2 of chop. Then wiper pockets were added to the body for the hidden wipers. Two 51 Kaiser grille bars were modified, taillights were hand formed and a basecoat of PPG dark green pearl were applied. Then candy green laid on top and finished off with a clear urethane topcoat. The car has so many unique features and mods (too many to list here) such as a frenched gravel pan widened two inches per side, a gas filler relocated to the trunk, widened front and rear bumpers, a hood created out of a 69 Caddy center section and lengthened one inch, frenched in headlights made from G.E. marine spotlights and flush mounted body molding hand crafted from brass. But, perhaps the most interesting feature of the body are the fender skirts. The rears are flush mounted, but the fronts are truly unique! Theyre connected to the steering and actually open to allow the wheels to turn! The sculptured body rests on a custom chassis and features a Chevelle front and rear clip attached to a pair of 2x5-inch rectangular side rails all fabricated and fit by Dave in his garage. The rear end is a 10 bolt Chevy with 3.42 gears. Brakes are 68 Chevelle disc/drums with Corvette power assist. Power is supplied by a 1970 Cadillac Eldorado 500ci big block with a .060-inch overbore, a compression ratio of 10.0:1 and a Clay Smith hydraulic cam with 0525 lift. Chromed Caddy valve covers, HEI ignition and a 4-bbl carb topped with a 53 Caddy air cleaner complete the power plant. Handling the torque is GM Turbo 400 transmission with a stock converter. Spent gasses exit via two inch custom exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. Cooling is handled by a Griffin two row aluminum radiator. As stunning as the outside if this chop top is, its the interior that really puts it all together. What immediately draws your eye is the incredible had formed and fabricated dash, which features a...
