For 2006, Jeep has added more heavy-duty equipment to the base Unlimited model. An extended-wheelbase version introduced mid-2004, the Wrangler Unlimited models are designed to offer more room for people and cargo and improved handling and ride quality on the pavement while maintaining most of the shorter Wrangler's legendary off-road capability. Added for 2006, the Unlimited has four-wheel disc brakes, a 3.73:1 Dana 44 rear axle with limited-slip differential, and 15-inch aluminum wheels with 30-inch tires (stock). That's in addition to full-steel doors, fog lamps, Sunrider soft top with sunroof feature, tow hooks, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with CD player, high-back bucket seats, full-length console and courtesy lights. All Wranglers come with a fold-down windshield, removable doors and top, and a weatherproof interior. The Unlimited's box-section frame adds 10.0 inches to the standard Wrangler's wheelbase, extending it to 103.4 inches. There's also an additional five inches of rear overhang, which pulls its overall bumper-to-bumper dimension to 165.1 inches, or 15.0 more than the abbreviated model. The additional space is unequally apportioned in the interior. Leg and knee room in the back seat are expanded by just under two inches. But a whopping 13.0 inches is allotted to the area behind the rear seat. Cargo volume goes from 9 to 29 cubic feet. Out-of-sight cargo space has about doubled. For the first time a Wrangler can stow a very large cooler inside. Detail improvements to the Unlimited include a tip and slide driver's seat for easier rear access, more padding under the hood, behind the dash, and beneath the cargo area to reduce noise, and the so-called Sunrider soft top, which manually flips back to open a 45-by-23-inch sunroof above the front seats. The stretch in length, combined with the fractionally lower Sunrider top, gives the Wrangler Unlimited more car-like proportions. There is no out-of-the-showroom SUV that can match the Wrangler in the rough stuff. And that's true for either wheelbase version. Jeep's inline-6 produces ample power in all situations. It's rated at 190 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The inline-6 gives up 2 mpg to the manual-shift four-cylinder around town but returns the same 20 mpg on the highway as the four, with either the six-speed manual or the four-speed automatic. One thing the Unlimited does have to offset what little it gives up to the short-wheelbase, 4.0-liter model is a greater towing capacity (3500 pounds versus 2000) thanks in part to the added strength of an additional rear cross member. The Unlimited offers a smoother ride, a benefit of its longer wheelbase. Directional stability is much improved, with less dartiness and more confident on-center feel in the steering. The Unlimited is a good compromise for many people. This Wrangler has well over $4,000 in tasteful custom touches: 2-inch professionally installed lift, near-new Moto Metal Chrome Wheels with BF Goodrich 33 x 12 50R 15 M+S tires, Bushwhacker Pocket Style Fender Flares, Big Country Stainless Steel Side Bars, Bestop Billet Gas Hatch Cover, gun safe mounted under driver seat (previous owner was a policewoman), Pioneer CD Receiver with LCD Display, Color Customization, and USB Direct Control for iPod/iPhone, and a tow bar package including lights that allows towing behind a motorhome. Not shown but also included are yellow fog light covers, and chrome grill inserts. In any form, Wrangler remains an icon, a symbol of go-anywhere adventure. Although it's been re-engineered at least a half-dozen times over the past 60 years, the Wrangler is still as close as you can get to a direct descendent of the World War II-era Jeep.
