Named to celebrate Maserati's two victories at the Indy 500, the Maserati Indy first appeared in 1968, at the Salone dell'automobile di Torino as a prototype by Carrozzeria Vignale that was to replace the ageing Mexico and Quattroporte. Maserati needed a new, more modern four place car to supplement the already well-received Ghibli. The Indy was styled similarly and was also powered by Maserati's venerable quad-cam V8. Just fewer than 1200 examples were built in total. Offered here is an outstandingly preserved and remarkably original example of the rare 4.9 liter engine. This particular car retains all of its original equipment, body panels, etched glass, upholstery and factory original paint. Finished in brown paintwork over tan leather trimmings, the body gaps are very straight and consistent, the rubbers are in great condition as are all original Carello marker lenses. Tom Stanley, the second and long-term owner purchased the car from the original California owner in the late 1980's. As per Mr. Stanley the mileage of 29,340 is 100% original, as are the car's components, making this Indy perhaps one of the most original and lowest mile examples extant. Very rarely do great original examples surface in this kind of condition. All factory chalk markings and identification tags with the last four digits of the Indy's chassis number remain on the back sides of carpeting, the dash's quartz clock still retains the paper operating instructions tag, while the factory body number stampings and paint code sticker show no tape lines or overspray. Underneath, the Maserati does not disappoint. The frame and pans are completely solid, free of corrosion and bear the unmolested factory undercoating. The engine bay and stowage compartment tell the same story. Startups are reliable with solid handling reflected by its originality. Equipped with power steering, a pair of back seats and a large rear hatch, the Indy is a much more practical and pleasant to drive car than the Ghibli and meant to be enjoyed more regularly. This stunning Indy certainly lives up to its respected name, and makes for a strong preservation class competitor at national events such as the Concorso Italiano. $79,500.00 or Best Offer To learn more about this vehicle, please contact our sales department or Selling Made Simple.
