In fact, the updated car now looks a lot like its little brother, the Ghost. Rectangular headlights, up high where the aristocracy expects them, hide LED-based lamps (the first such setup fitted as standard to a production car, according to Rolls) that shine brightly. The previous Phantom's round units-which appeared to be fog lamps, but actually were xenon headlights-are gone. The result is a more cohesive, if slightly less distinctive, countenance. |Walkaround| Inside, the Phantom finally receives an updated navigation system with a larger, 8.8-inch screen and more map views. The controls for the infotainment system are upgraded to the latest BMW iDrive specification, with hard buttons that directly select the audio, navigation, or telephone menus. The Phantom desperately needed this revision, since its infotainment system dated back to the car's launch in 2003. |Summary| Rolls-Royce has left the 6.7-liter V-12 alone, but it has fitted a new eight-speed transmission that is said to boost combined fuel economy by 10 percent. Acceleration remains strong for a sedan that weighs almost the same as a Chevrolet Tahoe, Rolls claims a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.7 seconds. (That's probably conservative, as we recorded a 0-to-60 run of 5.4 in a car with the previous six-speed auto.) Not too many Phantom owners will engage in such accelerative shenanigans, but for those who do, Rolls-Royce will offer an optional Dynamic package, which is a first for the Phantom sedan. The package adds strengthening crossbars to the existing aluminum space-frame structure, stiffens the suspension, recalibrates the transmission, and adds a thicker rim for the steering wheel. 2012 Rolls-Royce Ghost Review| The Phantom II comes in four body styles. The standard Phantom features four doors and seemingly acres of room in the interior-it is an ultra-luxurious take on the 4-door family car. Those buyers who employ a driver may prefer the Extended Wheelbase version, which adds additional luxury and legroom to the rear-seat occupants, its extended wheelbase offering even more foot room than standard wheelbase versions. In contrast, the Coupe and Drophead Coupe feature only two doors. These two models represent the ultimate in personal luxury transportation, designed in every way to cater to owners who want to experience driving in one of the most exclusive cars ever built. |Walkaround| All Phantoms come with a huge list of standard features and interiors are immaculate. Leather is used nearly everywhere and is available in a variety of colors, both monotone and 2-tone. In fact-the entire interior of the car is really up to the buyer, with a mind-boggling number of configurations available. Rear seats can be configured for two, three or occasional third seat use, with unique bolstering and seat design for each. Various colors are available not just for the leather but for the thread used to stitch that leather together, headrests are available with or without the Rolls-Royce logo and the wood trimmed interior is available with four different types of wood finishes. Though it all sounds wonderfully old fashioned, the Phantom II is obviously a very modern vehicle. A brand-new navigation system has been introduced, it features full 3D maps and topography, displayed on a large 8.8 inch screen. Front, rear and even top view cameras make maneuvering the car much easier than in years past especially while parking, as the Phantom is a quite a large vehicle. Power comes from a 6.75L V12 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic. The engine is extremely torquey and is powerful enough to make the Phantom pretty quick in a straight line. But anyone looking to race the Phantom should probably be ashamed of themselves as they've completely missed the point of the vehicle. Yes, the car is fast and handles pretty well, but that's more of a byproduct of doing everything well than any specific design goal. Rolls-Royce would rather leave the racing to the race cars. The Phantom II is above that. |Summary| Safety has not been ignored and the Phantom II features a full suite of electronic devices to assist the driver in preventing an accident. Anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control are standard, as are seatbelt pretensioners, anti-whiplash restraints and side, front, knee and overhead airbags.
